Toastmasters Reflections

I have been a member of Toastmasters for over two years. I initially joined just to expand my social circle, then I got into public speaking, and some time this year I started to feel that these Toastmasters ideas do make sense and pay off.

As the brand of Toastmasters have been changed recently, and so has its motto, which now says Where Leaders are Made. I think it is a perfect explanation of what you get when you stick to it. But only sticking is not enough. Over these years I have seen many people coming to join the club – some of them were perfect examples of Toastmasters – eager, enthusiastic and willing to take risk. Some were not so much – overcritical and expecting things to happen.

As with any group of people, I think it is important to come with an open mind and ready to pitch in if a need comes and do your best. Life is a very funny thing, and you never know where you are going to meet you fellow Toastmasters – at a corporate meeting, job interview or anywhere else, really. Bad impressions are the ones who really stay with you. Good stay too.

But most importantly, any club is not just a group of people coming to practice a skill – it is a family, where you see good and bad things happen, and how you react, what you do and say goes a long way. Sometimes it stays with people forever.
